RIXC is pleased to host the Taiwanese artist Tuan Mu at the RIXC residency in Riga! The artist has been selected for the RIXC Immersive Art and Nature Residency Program 2025, in collaboration with Zone Sound Creative (Taiwan).

This year marks the first time that RIXC hosts Taiwanese artists as part of its residency programs. This initiative is part of the Subterranea project, a collaboration between Zone Sound Creative and RIXC, which brings several Taiwanese creatives to Latvia in 2025.

During the residency, Tuan Mu in collaboration with Franco-Canadian artist Rodolphe Macabéo, both artists did field research and sound recordings at the Kemeri National Park, resulting in a new sound performance titled Fire dwells in xylem, taking place at the RIXC Gallery, Friday, November 14, 2025 at 19:00 – read more HERE.

Prior to arrival in Riga, RIXC had begun the collaboration with both artists at the SensUs XR platform, resulting in XR artwork titled Ember. It takes inspiration from the collaborative XR project Oyat by artist Tuan Mu and composer Rodolphe Macabéo. Continuing their exploration of the boundaries between nature and technology, life and impermanence, the work weaves together the contemplative vision of ink painting with the 2022 wildfire at Dune du Pilat, reflecting on the natural cycle of destruction and renewal. It was presented at this year’s RIXC Art Science Festival 2025: Plants Intelligence, on October 18 – read more on the festival website HERE.

Tuan Mu (Taiwan, b. 1994) is an artist and independent curator based in Taipei. After graduating from Taipei National University of the Arts with a major in Ink Painting, he began seeking ways in which new media could reinterpret the unique worldview of traditional Asian culture, using a poetical approach to explore human perception and thinking in this age of technology. His artworks often develop from Buddhist and Taoist philosophies, East Asian animism and mythological tales. Combining media such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, animation, sound performances, ink painting and calligraphy, Tuan Mu’s artworks compose a transdisciplinary narrative structure, and engage the viewer in a dialogue. His artworks have been presented in numerous international exhibitions, including Durres Biennale, Athens Digital Arts Festival, Asia Digital Art Exhibition, CutOut Fest, Miami New Media Festival, Now & After International Video Art Festival, Venice Immersive Market Taiwan Pavilion, Festival ECRA, CineGlobe Film Festival, CYFEST Media Art Festival, RIXC Art Science Festival and Bogotá Short Film Festival.

As a curator, Mu attentively focuses on the potential of cross-cultural study and identity issues in contemporary contexts. His curatorial practices often engage curators, artists, and local people in fieldwork. During this he contemplates how exhibitions are constructed, recalibrating curatorial expectations and ideals. His curatorial proposals have been selected for the SLY Art Space Emerge Curator Project, NCAF Curator’s Incubator Program, and nominated for the Taishin Art Award. His curatorial projects include the exhibition Home: Foundation, Wall Cancer, Skin, and Shelter (2023, Taitung Art Museum, Taiwan), Humus (2023, MoCA Taipei, Taiwan) and Beyond Interfaces—Taiwanese Video Program (2024, Mirzoyan Library, Armenia).
