RIXC Center for New Media Culture is pleased to announce an open call for Northern Climate Practices, a new Baltic-Nordic residency programme connecting artistic research, ecological fieldwork, science, and digital technologies across urban and rural environments in Latvia.

The open call invites professional artists from the Nordic and Baltic countries (Latvian artists not eligible) working at the intersection of art, science, and technology, whose practices engage with ecological and climate-related themes, particularly through digital media, sound, data visualisation, immersive ecological art, and extended reality (XR).

The programme offers three two-month residency periods across two interconnected locations: RIXC Fields in the Talsi region and RIXC Art Science Residency in Riga. The first and third residency periods will be primarily based at RIXC Fields, while the second will take place in Riga, with access to the rural site. All three residencies combine opportunities for ecological fieldwork with access to RIXC’s digital production facilities.

RIXC Fields – Talsi Region, Latvia

RIXC Fields is a rural residency site offering direct access to agricultural land, orchards, meadows, forests, wetlands, and a pond for ecological fieldwork and artistic experimentation. The site includes a 150 m² residency house with five bedrooms, a shared kitchen and bathroom, sauna, spacious living and studio areas, workshop facilities, and a greenhouse.

RIXC Art Science Residency – Riga, Latvia

Located at Lenču iela 2 in Riga’s Art Nouveau district, RIXC provides a 30 m² residency apartment with a separate bedroom and studio space, high-speed internet, and access to a shared XR Laboratory with digital production tools and a mediatheque. The nearby 73 m² RIXC Gallery provides space for exhibitions and public presentations.

Artists at both locations will have opportunities to combine ecological fieldwork with technological production, supported by RIXC’s artistic, curatorial, and technical infrastructure.

Each residency will conclude with a public presentation of the artists’ research and creative outcomes. Selected works may be further developed for exhibition.

Eligibility & Artistic Focus

The open call invites professional artists from the Nordic and Baltic countries working at the intersection of art, science, and technology, with a particular interest in ecological and climate-related artistic practices. Latvian artists are not eligible.

We welcome proposals that explore Northern ecological and social conditions through situated artistic research, combining ecological fieldwork with digital media, sound, data visualisation, immersive ecological art, and extended reality (XR). The programme particularly encourages artistic approaches that connect technological experimentation with ecological research across urban and rural environments.
